Postpartum Care & Complications

Postpartum care covers the period after delivery and management of any complications that arise. ROUTINE POSTPARTUM CARE: • Monitoring mother's recovery after vaginal or caesarean delivery • Breastfeeding support and counselling • Postpartum contraception counselling • Wound care (perineal or caesarean) • Postpartum depression screening POSTPARTUM COMPLICATIONS: • Primary postpartum haemorrhage (PPH) — immediate management • Secondary PPH — retained products, infection • Postpartum sepsis / puerperal fever • Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) prevention • Perineal wound breakdown / infection • Urinary complications MANAGEMENT: Emergency surgical intervention for severe PPH including B-Lynch suture, uterine artery ligation, and hysterectomy as last resort.
