Uterine fibroids (leiomyomas) are non-cancerous growths of the uterus that often appear during childbearing years. TYPES: • Submucosal — projecting into the uterine cavity • Intramural — within the uterine wall (most common) • Subserosal — projecting outside the uterus SYMPTOMS: • Heavy menstrual bleeding • Prolonged periods • Pelvic pain or pressure • Frequent urination • Difficulty conceiving TREATMENT: • Medical management — GnRH agonists to temporarily shrink fibroids • Myomectomy — surgical removal of fibroids, preserving the uterus (preferred for women wanting future pregnancy) • Hysterectomy — definitive treatment when fertility preservation is not required
